The name Rossendale is said to take the Celtic ‘ros’, meaning heath, and the Old Norse ‘dalr’ meaning valley, suggesting that Rossendale means Moor Valley. The expanse of moors viewed from valley’s towns suggests the name is quite fitting.
The Rossendale Hare website takes a look at the Brown Hare in its wild habitat - the same Moors that surround us. It also looks at the folklore of this strange, much-loved creature. We look particularly at its presence in Rossendale, and note the huge decline in numbers over recent years.
We hope that the Bring Back The Hare campaign to place Marjan Wouda's powerful Sir Hare sculpture in the centre of Rawtenstall and, fittingly, within the Hareholme Ward, will also help raise awareness of this wonderful wild creature, a symbol of the surrounding moorland, and help it prosper in the Valley.
This website has been created by the Campaign Group for Bring Back The Hare.
